A. Marc Harrison, a 52-year-old pediatric critical care specialist who has overseen a medical institution in the Middle East, will become Intermountain Healthcare's president and CEO in mid-October when Charles Sorenson retires.

The Intermountain Healthcare board announced the appointment Friday afternoon following a national search.

"Dr. Harrison has impressive experience and a proven track record of leading health organizations and is immensely qualified to build on Intermountain's legacy," said Scott Anderson, Intermountain Healthcare's chairman and CEO of Zions Bank.

Most recently he was chief of international business development for Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

The latter is a multi-specialty hospital established by the Abu Dhabi government that has a multinational workforce of 3,500 employees. It cared for patients from 31 countries in its first 10 months of operation, said Intermountain Healthcare spokesman Daron Cowley.

Harrison obtained his undergraduate degree from Haverford College in Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Dartmouth.

He then completed a residency and internship in pediatric critical care at the University of Utah. Harrison worked in the critical care unit at Primary Children's Hospital, also an Intermountain medical facility.

Cowley noted that Harrison's wife, Mary Carole, was chief resident in the same program at Primary.

In addition to being a doctor, Harrison has a master of medical management degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and has done additional management studies at Harvard.

He will oversee a nonprofit system of 22 hospitals, 185 clinics, a medical group with 1,300 physicians and a health-plans division called SelectHealth.

Sorenson will remain with Intermountain, Cowley said, serving as founding director of a company leadership institute set to open in 2018.
